Kelpie

A beautiful black horse standing beside a misty Scottish loch is not automatically transportation. The Kelpie is a shape-shifting water spirit whose charm, glowing eyes, and sleek hide lure travelers close before the ride turns deadly. Do not ride dripping steeds.

Ranger Fact: If a horse appears alone beside deep water and looks too magnificent to be true, admiration from shore remains completely free.

Point Value: Worth 20 Glory Points toward your Monster Rangers badge collection.

HOW TO EARN THIS BADGE

Choose one:

  • Read a traditional Scottish Kelpie tale and retell the warning at its center to another Ranger.
  • Visit a river, lake, or pond from a safe public area and identify three hazards that make careless water approaches dangerous.
  • Create a black horse silhouette or small craft with seaweed-like mane details inspired by traditional Kelpie descriptions.

Jr. Monster Rangers

Choose one:

  • With a grown-up, read or listen to an age-appropriate Kelpie story from Scottish folklore.
  • Visit a safe waterside location with a grown-up and point out three reasons to stay back from the edge.
  • Make a paper black horse with a dark flowing mane and one clear DON'T RIDE ME warning.

Secret Power (for the Monster Rangers RPG)

“Lochside Suspicion” — Once per session, when something beautiful or inviting near water is hiding danger, you sense that something is wrong before touching it.
